This Privacy Notice explains how OpenLaws Public Benefit Corporation (“OpenLaws”, “we”, or “us”) collects, uses, and discloses your personal Information. “Personal information” is information about you that we collect when you browse our website at https://openlaws.us (the “Web Application”) or use our services (“Services”). We recognize the importance of privacy and will from time to time update this Privacy Notice as we change or update our data collection practices, or as applicable privacy laws are updated.

1. Information We Collect

  1. Information you provide to us

    We collect the following types of personal information directly from you:

    • Contact information. When you contact us about our Services via the Web Application, we will ask you to submit your email address, name and company name (if applicable). If you purchase our business-to-business API, we will ask for the names and email addresses of company members authorized to use the Services.
    • Account information. When you sign up for our Services, we will ask you to provide a username and password.
    • Transaction and payment information. If you make a purchase, we collect information necessary to fulfill and keep a record of the transaction. Additional details on how your payment information is processed can be found below.
    • Other information you provide to us. We collect any other information that you choose to provide to us, including information or feedback regarding the Site and Services.

  2. Information received from third parties

    Through Plausible Analytics, our third-party service provider, we track overall trends in our Web Application traffic, but we do not track individual visitors.

    • We may, however, use Google Analytics to analyze traffic to the Web Application via cookies or similar technologies and understand the usage of the Site. To learn more about Google Analytics’ data practices, please visit Google’s support page. You can opt-out of Google Analytics on your browser by clicking here or visit your browser settings and preferences.
    • Log data and device information. We collect information about the device you use to connect to the Web Application and how you use our Services. Depending on how you connect to the Web Application, this information includes your device’s IP address, your device type, browser type, internet service provider, operating system, and unique device identifiers. It also includes activity and usage information, such as the frequency with which you use the Site, how long you stay connected, the pages that you navigate to, links that you view (if applicable), information related to your use of the Site, and other ways that you interact with the Site.
    • Do not track. “Do Not Track” (“DNT”) is a standard for web browsers that aims to inform the websites you visit that you do not want information about your online activity collected over time and across third-party websites or online services.   3. Information received from third parties

    From time to time, we may receive or collect personal information about you from third-party sources. For instance, we may collect or receive personal information about you from other third parties, including:

    • Our payment processors (see below);
    • Fraud prevention services;
    • Analytics providers; and
    • Publicly available sources (e.g., social media).

2. Payment Processing

When you make a payment to OpenLaws, your credit card or other payment information is collected and processed by third-party payment processing services that comply with payment card industry standards. For example, if you pay with a credit card, the payment information that you provide is transmitted directly to our payment processor. We only receive limited information from our payment processors as a record of your transaction and do not receive full credit card or payment information.

3. Children's Privacy

The Web Application and Services are not designed for or directed to children under the age of 16, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children under the age of 16.

4. How We Use Your Information

We use your personal information to:

  • Provide and manage the Web Application and Services. We use your personal information to provide, administer and manage the Site and our Services. This includes sending you important updates, communications about changes to this Privacy Notice or other terms and policies.
  • Process your transactions. If you make a purchase, we will use your personal information to process your payment and ensure the fulfillment of your transaction. This may include information provided to us by our payment processors, as explained above.

Some links on the Web Application may redirect you to third-party websites and services that we do not operate. We implement and maintain reasonable administrative, physical, and technical measures designed to safeguard and protect personal information under our control from unauthorized access, use, and disclosure. Nevertheless, because no data transmission or storage system is completely secure, we cannot guarantee the security of your information.

We keep personal information for as long as necessary to fulfill the purposes for which we have collected it. This includes complying with our legal, tax, or reporting obligations.

OpenLaws is based in the United States and processes personal information in the United States. As such, when you use the Web Application and/or Services, your personal information may be processed outside of the country or region in which you reside.

You have certain choices and may exercise certain rights with respect to our use of your personal information. Please note that rights and requests may be subject to applicable exceptions. We will not discriminate against you if you decide to exercise these rights:

  1. Correct or update your account information and settings

    If you have created an account through the Web Application, you may review, correct, or update your information by logging in and clicking on Settings. Please note that changes may require some time to take effect.

  2. Exercise your marketing choices

    If you no longer wish to receive our marketing and promotional emails, you may opt out of receiving them by following the opt-out or unsubscribe instructions included in any communication that you receive from us. Please note that even if you opt out of receiving promotional communications from us, we may still send you administrative and transactional messages from which you cannot opt out.

  3. Request to access or delete your personal information

    If you wish to know what information OpenLaws holds about you or delete your personal information, please contact us at privacy@openlaws.us. We will take all reasonably necessary steps to confirm your identity before addressing any requests, which may be subject to applicable exceptions.
