We wish we could provide law data for free. The reality is that maintaining an up-to-date, structured dataset covering all 50 states requires a team of domain experts and engineers. And that costs money. Our goal is to provide this data sustainably, and we have been delivering codified law to customers in production since 2021. As we become more efficient, we hope to provide free options in the future.
Our data today is available to legal aid organizations, LSC-funded programs, access to justice initiatives, academic researchers, and journalists at a reasonable cost. Fee waivers are available to these organizations, if needed.

Federal law updates weekly; states update monthly or quarterly.
The API returns data in production ready JSON and Commonmark standard Markdown. Bulk data exports are delivered in JSONL format and are ready for ETL. All content includes structured metadata. Data provenance metadata and HTML are also available on our Enterprise plans.

All subscriptions are subject to the OpenLaws Subscription Agreement.
Our SOC 2 Type 2 attestation is in progress. Our Enterprise plans are tailored for companies and firms with security requirements and procurement processes, including security questionnaires.
Our APIs and bulk data products do not handle PII or sensitive data as part of its normal operation.
